Symptoms
When connecting to a Virtual Center and backing up a virtual machine this error is reported when processing the .vmdk file and the backup fails. When connecting directly to the ESX server (host) then the backup is fine without errors.
Cause
The user used in the Virtual Center is not member of the Administrators group (local admin). It might be a domain user instead which is not sufficient. Also on the ESXi host not the same account is used and also does not have enough permissions.
Workaround
Create an account on the Virtual Center that is member of the Administrators group (local administrator) and on the ESXi Server create an account with the same username and password and assign that account Administrator permissions in VMware Infrastructure Client.
