4368 – Failed to create directory entry. (The symbolic link cannot be followed because its type is disabled

Symptoms

Error: Failed to create directory entry. (The symbolic link cannot be followed because its type is disabled

1. The error is reported during backup (file system backup sets protecting Windows Vista or Windows 2008 servers) or when trying to expand the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All users while editing the backup items list in DS-User backup set's properties.

2. The error might be reported during restore (file system set created for BMR purpose).

Cause

1. Microsoft KB 931707
2. The IP of the target restore server was used during the restore to alternate location and the destination restore computer name was not specified at the time the network credetials were provided.

Workaround

1. Use the fqdn in the "from" field (backup set's credentials) and include in the backup items list both System state and the C$.
2. When providing the username in the restore wizard, either use the format computername\username or specify the computer name in the "From" field if available (for this later scenario, provide only the username in the "Connect As" field and the computer name in the "From" field).
